We're almost halfway through the season. Where do things stand? You are Locked On Bama, your daily podcast on the Alabama Crimson Tide. Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm Luke Robinson. That's Alabama Internet legend, Jimmy Stein. This is Locked On Bama. Thanks for making Locked On the number one sports podcast network there is. You guys are the absolute best. This episode is brought to you by Five Hour Energy. That's the number five hour energy. Jimmy, a lot to get into today. Obviously, Twitter is still a flutter with Refgate from this past weekend. People are posting things from 2017, or Tyler Simmons being offsides, and it's exhausting because I think now there are some Bama fans who probably feel differently. However, I know in the case of you and I, it is more like, hey, all we want is for those officials to never work again. That's all we want. That's all we want. What did they do to Napoleon? They exiled him. How about exile? Can we do exile? Elba? He was exiled to Elba, which is actually a small town, I think, in Mobile County, I think. Yeah, there is. I don't think Napoleon was there. It could be. If he was, no one would know, which I guess is the point of an exile. But no, I'm with you. I'm not calling for the death penalty. We're not crazy. Just exile. And again, people have posted pictures of these still shots of somebody being held or something doing this. And I'm going to look at that. First of all, you're kind of making our point. Second. Yes, that is the point. Secondly, you know, posting what you think, what you appear, what appears to you in a still shot to be a hold from the first quarter or second quarter is not the same as an obvious defensive pass interference at towards the very end of the game where it is singled out. And I want to go back to see when a referee has told me in the past, a couple of them actually have, we really could call holding on about every play. And it's but it's difficult because they also have to judge, OK, how much holding was holding, you know, and you've got a bunch of people around you, all this mass of humanity, and you're trying to figure that out, you know, while not getting in the way of the play and things like that. The defensive pass interference play this past weekend was there were two Georgia guys and one Bama guy isolated in the front corner of the end zone, and the world saw a DPI and the refs didn't. That's it. That's all we're saying is when you miss something that egregious, maybe this isn't the career choice for you. Now, when you miss a hold on some times on a still shot that somebody shows you later, you can go, OK, maybe I should have called that. But in the moment, that was very difficult for me to see. That DPI was not difficult to see. That's all our point is. Georgia didn't cheat. I want to say it again. Georgia didn't cheat. Georgia didn't cheat. Georgia was a better team. They won the game and I give them full credit for that. I respect Georgia. I truly do. I think they are the best team in the country and should be number one. Congratulations. I want to comment on how the rift sucked. Yeah, I commented on Twitter on a still shot, but not a still shot. It was a video, actually. The video of a bad spot where an Alabama defender stopped a good yard short, a good full yard short of a first down, and the official on the field gave Georgia first down. It was overturned by replay. The spot was overturned and they were moved back rightfully. But I had a Georgia fan immediately stop your wine and replay overturned it. See, that's just a great example of what Luke's talking about. He missed the point entirely. It's not that replay overturned it. It's not that Alabama got cheated. It was these guys are this bad. He said that was a first down. How could anyone possibly look at that and rule that it's a first down? It was just an example of the officials on the field being really bad. Sure, that one was fixed by replay. Later on, though, as we saw, replay didn't fix one, that they had no business changing. But we're complaining that the officiating is bad. We are not complaining that the officiating is one sided or that Georgia only won the game because the officials helped them. We've never said that. We're not saying that. In fact, we say the opposite. Georgia physically beat Alabama. They outgained Alabama by 110 yards, outrushed them over 200 to 160. Gunner Stockton was the best quarterback on the field that night. All of those things are true. That's why Georgia won the game. However, isn't this a great time for even Georgia fans to say, Sankey, this needs to be radically improved and fixed as best as possible? Why don't you join us in saying that? Because when you don't, you're going to get bit by it too at some point. Let me also say this, going back to what you said about instant replay and the interception, non-interception. I've watched that a gazillion times. I mean, and I've seen people say he obviously caught it and other people say it obviously hit the ground. And if you've got two groups of people saying opposite things, that is not conclusive that this should have been overturned. That's our problem with it. And also, I'll say this one more time just to be clear, and then we'll stop. Probably not, but we'll try. I'm all good if we just don't do any replay anymore, because here's my thing, if you're going to overturn something inconclusive in that interception, then you should at least be able to overturn a non-defensive pass interference call that was obvious to even the one with the worst eyesight there, anybody. It was obvious to everybody and anybody who had eyes that was defensive pass interference. And that if our goal is to get calls right, then we're going to spend a lot of time replaying stuff. So my point is, let's quit replay. Let's just quit it and let's accept we get mistakes. Let's accept that. I could live with that, but it bothers me that you overturn something that is inconclusive when you made a ruling the opposite way and you're supposed to only overturn it when it's conclusive. And then you have something that is completely obvious and then a damn thing you can do about it. Yeah, I don't want to get rid of replay. I just want to, like you said, I want it to be more in cement what replay is there to do and maybe rephrasing the bylaws or whatever it takes to make sure that the replay center isn't substituting their own judgment for the judgment of the officials on the field. Replay should be used to overturn a clear injustice. And that should be the standard. Change a clear injustice. Don't say, it's close. I've seen it ten times. I'm still not sure. But that ball must have hit the ground. That is not while replaying is there for Institute. It's not what it's there for. It's being abused in that way. And that's just a great example of a call that never should have been overturned. Am I sitting here saying, you know, with my life on the line that QB caught the ball? No, I'm I'm with Luke. I believe he caught it. I think his hands were under it. That's what I believe is the case. If if there is some angle that shows the ball touched, a blade of grass between his hands, I would not be surprised to learn that. I'm not sure that he caught the ball. I'm just I feel like he did. I know this. It shouldn't have been overturned. What it goes back to what I heard Sankey say with my own ears at the Monday morning quarterback club when he said, you know, on the Daniel Hill where he stepped out of bounds in Kentucky thing, which again, that was inconclusive and they overturned it, whatever. He said, we have views and angles y'all aren't privy to. Why? Why do you have that? You have a super secret camera. Then Monday put out the photo. Monday, you would quell all this if you like. We had a different angle. Here's the photo. He was out, but they're not going to do that. Because you're not going to do that, we're free to say, you're full of it. You don't have it, you're lying. We're free to say that because you don't put it out. Anyway, all right. I said what we're going to start with was overview of Bama and the SEC. Let me say this, that I don't know why I say, let me say this. It's not like you all have a choice. I'm going to say it. But I say that as just as filler, I guess. Anywho, so Bama, four and one, I still think five and one, five and one, excuse me, five and one. Looking very good to me. I think I'm as fired up about the DeBoer era as I've ever been. Maybe outside of when we beat Georgia and Tuscaloosa a couple of years ago, but I'm super fired up about the DeBoer era. I think he won a lot of people over even in this loss. And I look across the SEC and all of a sudden, the schedule that you and I believe to be so daunting, which technically still is because we do play very talented teams, isn't quite as daunting. I look at this Tennessee game and call me nuts. I totally believe we're going to go in there with our hair on fire. I really believe I can't wait to make my prediction later because I'm going to predict Alabama Covers with ease. And maybe Tennessee is going to use that as locker room fodder. I don't care. I just believe this team is going to take what happened Saturday night and turn it into a positive. You make chicken salad out of what chickens do after they've eaten their own chicken salad, which is cannibalism. I don't know why. I hope they don't do that. Stop feeding your chickens, chicken salad farmers. It's not cool and a little pricey, I might add. They'd never know. Just use the chicken feed. OK. Yeah, they would never know. Well, very quickly in about a minute, Jimmy. What's a chicken feed anyway? Yeah, I mean, dry chicken salad. What is your overall view of the SEC at the moment? I mean, clearly Georgia. Georgia is the best team in the SEC. Either Alabama or Texas is the second best team. I'm not sure. Right now, I would say it's Alabama. I do think that Georgia has separated themselves. I think there's a gap between one and the rest, and Alabama and Texas and maybe others like Ole Miss are in that group right behind it. But I love Alabama's spot. I'll simplify it. Alabama's going to be a big favorite against Vanderbilt, Chattanooga and Auburn. To make the playoff, you've got to win two of the next three. Two of the next three. A&M at home should be the easiest of the three. I think LSU and Baton Rouge is going to be tougher to beat than Tennessee and Knoxville myself. To me, this is the hinge game. Now, it won't work out exactly like you foresee. That sports rarely does. That's why they call it gambling and not winning. It rarely works out exactly like you think it is. But I would say, based on how I look at it, the Tennessee game is the hinge game. You beat Tennessee, you make the call of football playoff. You lose to Tennessee, you're probably not. Yeah. In that way, every game from now on is monsterly important. But even if we'd beaten Georgia and lost to Tennessee, I would all of a sudden be like, I'm not liking the way things are headed because I don't believe Tennessee to be a great football team. Going to talk a little five-hour energy now because Five Hour Energy is sponsoring this particular podcast. They've got some delicious flavors, one of which being cotton candy. You have my attention. lockedonbama.supercast.com is where you want to go to join our everyday club. $5 a month. Super easy. And you will love it. It's a lot of fun. I promise you. The people there are fantastic. Also want to one more time give a shout out to the pants store and allowing us to be there this past weekend and serve some drinks. And we saw some people. There was Vani. I think I saw Dr. Vani, Dr. Vani. She's a doctor. She has a short for Veronica. I was like, wow, I'd never heard that before. But man, she was so sweet. I appreciate you so much, Vani. She was from Delaware. I think Delaware. Was it Delaware? Yep. And then there was somebody else from Idaho who was like, yeah. That was so cool. We are basically coast to coast as long as those two things are on the coast, I don't think Idaho is. Idaho is not on the coast. I don't believe. But I failed geometry. Maybe because you were going to the geography class while you should have been in geometry. So Jimmy, let me say this about, dang it, let's talk about Keelan Russell for a second. Sure. Because this is another reason I believe Alabama is going to have a good game this weekend, is Keelan Russell. Keelan Russell waited around, I know everybody's seen the tweet by now, where he waited around for Gunner Stock to do his interview, and he stood there patiently after being told, hey, going into the locker room, everybody's in the locker, he's like, I got to tell Gunner congratulations. That's what this is about. That's the kind of stuff that makes you proud. The stuff that doesn't make you proud is whoever was throwing trash on the field don't ever do that again for any reason. Not even at the officials. I know that's what got it started because I was there near the student section when it was happening. It was the officials running off the field when that started happening, but even that, that's not cool either. Me and Luke will complain about the officials here, but we're not throwing things at them. We merely ask that they be removed from the country peacefully. But you can't, and then the other thing, I've seen the video of the fan who like got into it with, I think, Rylan Wilson from Georgia. Dude, evaluate yourself, evaluate your life. That's, that's screwed up. And I don't care how old this guy was, and it was very difficult to tell. He looked like he was in that LXCity time warp where I can't tell if you're 22 or 62. I mean, once somebody hits 22 in Alexander City, that you can buy that they're 22 or 62 or 48 or whatever. And then when they get to 62, you can be like, man, you look great for 62. You look like you're 24. But after 62, it's all downhill. LXCity ends up removing me. Got some six good years left. You guys are fantastic. But dude, you got to re-evaluate your life if you're going to get into it with a player, by the way, a player who would pummel you. And I would root for the player, I would root for the Georgia player in that instance. Never. Hecklers, no. Heckling should be, here's another thing, for exiling officials, I want to jail hecklers. Even if you just say something, leave the athletes alone. Cheer for them, boo them, but don't engage with them. That's not what this is about. It's not cool. Rylan Wilson should go to that guy's job and heckle him Seinfeld style, 100 percent. Maybe that guy would lose his pinky toe, just like Toby did. Toby. Yeah, Toby. That was her name, which is a weird name for a woman, but okay. Sorry if you're named Toby and you're a woman out there. Keelan is going to rebound nicely though. I agree. Back to the original point. I think we said this after the last show. Gunner was better than Keelan the other night. Gunner is the better quarterback today. Keelan is going to pass him. That was a point I tried to make a few weeks ago about Camario Taylor, and boy, did that get lost in the translation big time. I got attacked for it too. Yeah, I got attacked for it. But I think what we're trying to say then, I'll try to say more clearly now is, Gunner was better than Keelan on Saturday, probably because he's like a senior and he's been starting games for a couple of years, and he's got a ton of experience, and that's why. I think Keelan will be a better quarterback than Gunner, probably even by the end of this season. All we were saying about Camario is, Camario got to play last year while Keelan sat, and Camario is off to this great start, and because Camario has gotten to play a little bit more than Keelan, for right now, we said this before Camario got hurt, Camario is probably a little ahead of Keelan, but Keelan is going to catch him, and Keelan is going to zoom past him as soon as he gains experience. I think we saw this past Saturday what we were talking about. I think Gunner, he didn't out talent Keelan, I think he just out experienced Keelan, especially in big games. I think if Alabama and Georgia play again at the end of this season, I would even possibly bet a small American wager that Keelan has passed him up, even by December as Keelan continues to gain experience. These next three games in particular, big games at Knoxville, at Baton Rouge, against Texas A&M, these are the things that's going to help Keelan grow exponentially. Yeah, absolutely, he's going to rebound. And I think he'll play well. Tennessee is very good on defense. So I think Tennessee is one of the better defenses in the league. I'm a little surprised they're this good, but they are this good. The numbers say they are. It'll be a challenge this Saturday. What is it? Is it Donald Glover, the guy who was also Childish Gambino? He's got a little GIF out there where he goes, yeah. Like me, I'm glad you're good on defense. Because he's like a comedian too, right? Yeah, he's done a bunch of stuff. He's like a comedian and he was the star of that show, Atlanta, and his name is Donald Glover. Yeah, he's also one of the Spider-Man. And then he sings? Yeah, he does a rap. Yeah, Childish Gambino, right? Yeah. I think he was in a Magic Mike movie? Probably. I mean, you would know about that more than I. Isn't Donald Glover the name of the guy with Mo Gibson and Lethal Weapon? That's... Donald Glover was the actual, yeah. Maybe Donald. It's very confusing. It's very confusing. This is very... Okay. You got me all mixed up. What the hell was I going to say? No, but I'm like Childish Gambino. Good. I'm glad their defense is good. I'm glad it's good. Because you know what? Keelan didn't want to go play some rinky-dink defense. I want you to play a good defense and kick ass because that's who Keelan Russell is. Well, it improves you. You're only going to get better. I mean, you know, you're only going to get better playing against good players. I mean, I grew up playing tennis. That's the best example of you're not going to get better beating up on guys that you can beat 6-0, 6-0. You're going to get better playing against guys, kids better than you. And I'm not saying that Tennessee is better than Keelan. I'm saying these challenges, being challenged, rises your game. And it's exactly what Keelan needs. And he is going to bounce back. And I feel like he's going to play really well on Saturday. It'll be interesting to see, though, who's snapping the ball to him. Is it, you know, we'll probably find out today from the press conference, press conferences about Del Gotti. Is Mal Waldrop going to be at center? Is Del Gotti going to be back? Is Ryan going to be playing at all? My feeling is we record this on Monday morning. I'm mentally prepared for it to be Mal Waldrop at center and Ryan not playing next Saturday. Is that going to change how I predict the game? No, I think it's going to be closer than Luke thinks it is. But I do believe Alabama is going to win this game. I said before the season started during the season, prediction shows we were doing, I thought we would go one and one in this stretch. I thought if we beat Georgia, might lose at Tennessee. But if we lost to Georgia, we'd beat Tennessee. And I'm not changing my mind. I do think the loss to Georgia is going to help a little bit in terms of getting everybody back on the same page quickly. Do you like how I identify with our younger audience by throwing yos in occasionally? I do. Well, I know you're trying to fight getting to 62, obviously. Well, I live in the mountains. I'm not sure I'm in the time warp anymore. I may have found a wormhole. I was in Alexander City, death knell, 62. Well, you talked about the injury, so we will find out. Here's something I want to talk about, though, real quick, throw in, because Connor Talty, he's been fantastic, right? I think we all know this, was he like 10 of 10 or whatever he is, he's perfect. And he made another one just and all the kicks aren't just, boy, did that just sneak inside the upright like the Pitt Virginia Tech thing. It was just, Connor, everything's been center cut. He's been great. But the guy I want to shout out is Alex Rozier. He is a walk on snapper. He's a senior. Everyone remembers last year, you know, what happened in Oklahoma. I mean, what happened in Tuscaloosa against Oklahoma where, you know, there's a bad snap and Connor went off on the guy. We all know that. Well, what a lot of people don't realize is there had been quite a few bad snaps. That's what led to that. Well, they changed snappers after that happened. They went to Alex Rozier and you know what happened? Connor didn't miss this streak that he's on that we're all impressed with. Because I know everybody listens to the show is like totally impressed by Connor. Those have been Alex Rozier snaps and sometimes the long snapper doesn't get attention unless something goes wrong. Like what happened in Oklahoma? It's not cool that we only bring them up when something goes wrong. Alex has been great. I think he's a huge part of Connor Talte's success. So I want to make a point to to to acknowledge Alex Rozier is good work, Lockon. He's been in Alabama for four or five years. Hopefully he'll get his NFL shot. But he's been doing a fantastic job on the snaps and Connor's numbers prove that. Yeah, I agree with you. And I appreciate you shouting him out. But we talked about injuries. We're going to find out a little more today with you. I think race. I don't think race is going to be out for the year. I hadn't heard anything about that. Let's let's hope. Yeah, I don't I don't I don't think race is out for the I don't believe that either. Now, now we're literally when we're done when we're done recording this particular show, the coaches hit the podium. So we're going to find out a lot more. You can you can hear it on tomorrow's show, which we're going to record just a few hours from now. But but we'll have the benefit of that. We'll find out a lot more today from Coach DeBoer and the coordinators. But no, I don't believe race is out. And my guess is Ryan's in Concussion Protocol, he's going to miss a lot of practice. Ryan needs to rest that knee that clearly is still bothering him. So I'm not so confident in beating Tennessee that I'm like, ah, we don't need Ryan to beat them. I don't look at it that way at all. I just think it's best for the team and for Ryan to give him a few days off. The kids just a little beat up. We need him 100% for the stretch. Let's put Noah Rogers and Derrick Meadows and Sedarian Morgan out there and go beat Tennessee. I'm 100% on board with that. You know I love Ryan Coleman Williams. Recruiting, we won't get into it, but I want to say this about recruiting. God dang it, I did it again. Shout out to the guy and Ryan Wilson's intermingling. And then the throwing the trash on the field, notwithstanding the atmosphere Saturday night was amazing. If you were a recruit there and you didn't enjoy that, you're just not going to enjoy anything. It was as good of an atmosphere as you could possibly ask for in college football. It was fantastic. And the crowd was into it and loud and I was a little worried because it was a long day and it was a little wet and I was like, and man, they showed out. And I mean, I just thought it was awesome. And so I think everybody was impressed. We'll find out more as recruiting updates roll in. But I just wanted to give a shout out to the crowd. Oh, it was fantastic and recruiting is going great. I do think we'll get good news soon. Not a law block, but once again, pressing Glasgow, the corner from Georgia, I think is close to making a decision. And right now, I think it's fair to say Alabama leads. Also, Alabama offered a defender, I'm gonna call him a defender, committed to Florida State. And you know, Florida State's a bit of a mess. So you kind of have to like Alabama's odds if they get serious about this guy. Florida State's recruiting him as a DB. Alabama likes this guy to grow into a linebacker. So you have to like the athleticism there. He's a kid from Georgia. I'm just now learning about him, but he was somebody Alabama offered over the weekend. This is a 2027 guy. Alabama would like to add to this 2027 class, but they're going to be adding guys. Let's be honest, because we're honest on the show. They're going to add guys that don't cost a lot of money. Why? Because 2027 money needs to be spent on retaining the talent already on the team. I'm sure all of y'all are noticing how good some of these kids are. Kids coming back, they're going to need raises. And the money is better spent on these experienced players that we know are good coming back, as opposed to a high school kid who may or may not pan out. So they're going to focus on, I think, these inexpensive guys. But hey, you know who was inexpensive? Treshawn Brown. Guess what? He's one of those guys they need to pay to retain. Ain't no doubt. One other thing that just came up, Mike Rodak, just by the way, Rodak was the main villain in the old, oh God, what was it? It was Goldar and Sylvar. Rodak was the space giants. Anyway, Alabama is the easiest remaining schedule among SEC teams according to ESPN's strength of schedule metric. That is bananas when you look at who's on the schedule. But the names, but I guess is right because, I mean, if Tennessee is not as good as I think Tennessee and A&M isn't as good. And if A&M is not that good and if Vandy is getting pummeled and Auburn isn't any good, all of a sudden, yeah, the schedule looks a hell of a lot easier. And LSU is losing at Kentucky. And somebody just tweeted that Sam Levitt is due $5 million next year. And somebody said, well, he must get paid by the interception. I like that. Anyway, I do think, you know who's going to win some games down the stretch that's going to help us? I boldly believe it's Mississippi State. And Mississippi State, yeah. They'll find a couple wins. Hey, let me tell you something. Don't you count out Mississippi State this weekend at LSU? I don't count them out at all. Now, I do wonder about Camario's foot. I mean, is Camario back to 100% health? I don't know the answer to that. If I felt Camario's 100% healthy, heck, I might pick Mississippi State to win that game in this weekend. All right. That's going to do it for today's pod. We'll be back tomorrow morning. Till then, roll tide, everybody. Roll tide. The Locked On Podcast Network is brought to you by FanDuel.
